« Superbaby chained » photographic print of sculpture (ceramic, acrylic paint, silk ;12cms by 2.5cms) This work formed part of an exhibition which was the culmination of a residency in the Healing Arts Programme, in Waterford University Hospital, Ireland. The Healing Arts programme invites artists to engage with the hospital experience for the duration of a residency of 9 months. Laherty’s take on this was to create « Superbaby » , a series of sculptures which were placed in different positions around the hospital until he eventually finishes in A&E , where his suit was left hanging. The idea was to convey the desire for our loved ones to be invincible , which of course is not possible. The artist also created a series of photographic prints of the old hospital wards

into the Blue #1 and #2 formed part of a series of images I completed for my degree exhibition in 1998. The work is concerned with personal issues surrounding myself and my son, and my separation from him throughout the year at college. My focus was on the surface shared by mother and son, not only physical, but mental and emotional, and how space that can provide protection and strength can also become a site for manipulation if intruded upon. The work methods used involved the use of objects and images in relation to each other in order to define a space. The materials are ready-made, sometimes scattered by me, and reflect concerns with the perception of reality, pretence and deception.
